Below are extracts from ZIE 2006/07 President
Eng. Martin Manuhwa's Presidential Address,
"Reinventing The Role of The Engineer in Society".
It is an interesting exercise to review the Presidential addresses of
the past 60 years,. which were mostly on technical and specialized engineering
knowledge and later on matters of management, leadership and sometimes
social commentary. In this address, it is on the status and role of
the engineer, the systems we need to put in place in order to deliver
value to our members.
Systems thinking will help our Executive Board to identify the real
causes of issues and know how to address them. As engineers we need
the broad-based and holistic overview in order to make the proper decisions.
The Institution and its membership should embrace Corporate Governance
and the Executive Board will use it as a tool to ensuring that managers
avoid serving their own interest but those of the shareowners and other
stakeholders.
We as engineers and technicians need to stay abreast with new trends.
Inventiveness and creativity must be the hallmark of any successful
engineer, creating practical ways of encouraging resourcefulness in
engineering by harnessing young engineers.
We wish to promote the respect and visibility of the engineer by advocating
for the recognition and rewarding of engineers according to their contribution
to wealth creation. The Engineering Council Act should be pursued vigorously
to ensure that there is registration of engineers and technicians hence
raising their status in society. We will endeavor to create the recognition
of Zimbabwean qualifications in engineering throughout the world so
that our engineers will be well remunerated where ever they are. We
will improve our networks with other professional bodies to gain on
synergies. We hope to commission studies on Infrastructure and on the
Needs and Numbers of Engineering Manpower so that we can address imbalances
or skills gaps we face. We will revise the structure of ZIE to increase
our efforts and effectiveness to the benefit of our members and all
stakeholders.
It is time to contribute to the success of our institution by being
active members. It is time to make a difference. Lets all contribute.
